Evergreen

The Problem

Today’s eco-conscious customers have to balance multiple commitments, and have limited time and mental bandwidth to research sustainable brands and proper waste disposal methods for every product they use.

The Idea

Evergreen: a mobile app that educates eco-conscious consumers on the environmental impact of their daily household products, enabling them to make sustainable choices, always.

Stage 1: Concept

Development began with the creation of a customer journey map, from which we developed our paper prototypes and initial wireframes.

Stage II: Insights & Iterations

From our prototypes, we conducted interviews with potential users. These interviews offered insights into potential issues with the Evergreen app, which we addressed in our next prototype iterations. Examples of feedback include:

The Issue:

  • 30% of our users thought the disposal information was a secondary aspect of the app, and not visible enough.

The Fix:

  • ‘Quick Info’ became our patented ‘Greenscore’, and ‘Local Disposal’ changed to ‘Disposal Guide’

Product Comparison

The Issue:

  • 22% of our users mentioned wishing they could compare multiple products with the barcode scanner easily.

The Fix:

  • We incorporated a comparison feature directly into the product page.

Stage III: User Testing

With our mid-fi prototypes completed, we were able to conduct user testing prior to moving onto final prototype development. This testing revealed the following insights, which guided our subesquent work.

1

87% of users preferred using a search bar over a scanner option.

2

88% of users felt like the app was easy to navigate.

3

87% of users felt the app needed more color and visual interest.

Stage IV: Learnings

As we wrapped our project, we took the time to compile our reflections into a handful of key takeaways.

Listen to the data.
Don’t get too attached to one feature / user flow. Testing will reveal what you need.
Narrow your scope.
Consider creating this app for a particular grocery store such as Trader Joe’s, to make the business model more realistic, and to create stronger personas.
Prototype together.
Iterations were completed faster and with better results when created as a team.
